Chris Smalling Comes To David De Gea's Defense

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has defended David de Gea after the goalkeeper's errors in the first two matches of the season. West Brom's Shane Long and Manchester City's Edin Dzeko both scored after De Gea was slow to get down to low shots. "Some of the media has been a bit judgmental based on the first couple of games," said Smalling. "He has trained really well this week. You can see his agility and kicking. He will be a great goalkeeper for us." Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that the club is close to a deal to bring David De Gea to Old Trafford. Manchester United are looking to replace 40 year old Edwin Van Der Sar who will retire at the end of the season, a season which ends after the Champions League final against Barcelona this Saturday. "We've been working on it [the deal] for quite a while, he is young, very quick, good composure, presence and an outstanding replacement for Van der Sar." said Ferguson after Gary Neville's testimonial on Tuesday.
